Evan Veasey is a musician, songwriter, and teacher based in Asheville, North Carolina.
As a songwriter and guitarist, Evan Veasey plays with the conventions of 20th century Folk and American music to explore the recesses of his inner life with an unflinching light. Evan uses his writing as a mirror, a way of seeing himself and a way that the listeners who choose to inhabit the world of his songs can see themselves.
Born and raised in Southeast Michigan, Evan’s musical background is a hodgepodge of the sounds and creativity of that unique place. From the abrasive nihilism of the Stooges and the MC5 to the ragged earthiness of the Detroit Jazz community, Evan explored and absorbed all of this music while developing his own musical identity. From his teen years playing in garage bands to his time at the University of Michigan studying Jazz guitar, Evan has always been a searcher, looking beyond what he knows to the quiet (and not so quiet) emotional undercurrents of American life.
Evan brings this thoughtful searching into all the music he makes, whether writing or playing lead guitar with Ann Arbor based Emo band Fallow Land, doing session work with songwriter Max Cornell, or performing with improvisation-based new music ensemble Glitter Glam. Every song and situation calls for a different approach, a different way to take up space and serve the song; this constant yet ever-evolving challenge is a major motivator for Evan and his work.
After years of exploring and supporting other artists, in the Fall of 2021 Evan began the process of crafting his first collection of original songs titled Don’t Cry. Musically a mixture of contemporary folk, jazz and indie rock, Don’t Cry explores the way we relate to fear and loss, and rather than confronting or hiding from these feelings, learning to make space for and nurture these parts of ourselves.
Evan is currently working on a new single as well as a collaborative EP due to be released in 2025!
Teaching:
As a teacher, Evan practices a holistic approach that focuses on the individual students' needs. Evan has been teaching private music lessons since 2015. In that time he has had the privilege to work with students from all ages and backgrounds. He takes great joy in seeing his students grow and learning alongside them. Evan’s teaching style is informed by his own experiences as a student and player as well as time spent studying teaching with University of Michigan Professor Dr. Colleen Conway. In 2019 Evan was a contributing content editor on Dr. Conway’s most recent book, Private Music Lessons: A Manual for Teachers. To learn more about becoming a student, click here.
